The smell of sweets permeates the air as one steps into the cafe. All around are the sights of black and pink decorations. Calming music plays in the background, and Christmas and Easter combine to create a cafe of whimsical delight. All around the room the beauty of England engulfs you, taking you on a journey in this small corner of the world as you chow on a sweet and savory sugar mouse.

“[A sugar mouse] is an English candy. It’s in England,” Ruth Williams, the owner of The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House, said brightly.

A shop set up in downtown Laramie, Williams, the owner of the establishment for four years, brought a charm of her home country, England, to the people of Laramie. But her story, despite the cafe being the town's highlight with delicious sweets, had profound beginnings.

“She started selling her British recipe cupcakes in 2012 to support child victims of sex trafficking in Cambodia,” The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House website stated.

The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House ultimately prides itself on helping those in need as the money is not important.

According to the website’s “about” page, “After befriending a young girl there and her rescuer, Somaly Mam, [Williams] founded ‘Heart Mothers’, a group of over 100 women who support and mentor children rescued from this abomination. To help fund their orphanage Ruth started selling cupcakes at the local Farmers Market, sending thousands of dollars every year to help the girls. She became known in Laramie as ‘the cupcake lady’. After one particularly stormy day when rain ripped through the tent and ruined hundreds of cakes, she decided it was time to look for a storefront.”

Williams went into some brief detail about how she makes the fanciful cupcakes in her cafe: a make, bake and freeze process. However, one of the details she could not spoil was some secret ingredients to help give the cake a slick, soft texture.

In addition to the making-the-cupcakes part, one thing she enjoys about her cafe is seeing people when they walk through the door, especially the children.

“The happiest experience is when I love watching people’s faces when they come in. I love seeing people light up when they walk in, especially the children. When children come in, it’s pretty great to see them. Love spoiling children. I give little sugar mouse necklaces to the little girls,” Williams explained.

Williams also detailed when a 100-year-old lady came to the cafe with her three daughters for her birthday. Though she had dementia, she was given a knitted mouse from the cafe and cuddled it to her chest, which melted Williams’s heart when she saw it.

While Williams now has a fantastic storefront to call her own, work is enjoyable. From scones to cupcakes to drinks, she has it all, guaranteed! The cafe also allows parents to reserve tea parties for their little ones, making them feel like princesses for their special day.

The employees also have it good! Bianca Huitz, a cheerful, polite woman, is one of the people who works at Williams’s cafe. She expressed her love of customer service after working at The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House for a year and wanting to help drive a welcoming atmosphere in the cafe.

“My happiest experience is probably making customers laugh. My favorite thing is making a personal connection with the customers,” Huitz said cheerfully. “And I just feel like a lot of the people here are just so, like, welcoming and so loving, and it’s just awesome.”

Huitz also expressed happiness in working with fantastic coworkers, especially since she has one whom she considers to be her best friend. Most of her days start by entering through the door at 8 a.m., prepping the treats in the back of the cafe and then going out to serve customers. She typically works the morning shifts and enjoys the chance to help with the tea parties.

“I really like to make kids’ tea party trays. They have, like, little cupcakes and biscuits and fruit, and they have brownies that we decorate that are really cute,” Huitz expressed sweetly.

With The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House bringing delight to the beautiful corner of Laramie, no one will be disappointed when they walk through the doors to be greeted by smiling faces and the delicate smell of sweets. The Sugar Mouse Cupcake House is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., where people can buy treats, sit down for a cup of tea or have a delightful party. To those with a sweet tooth: with over fifty different products, you will never be disappointed when walking into Williams’s cafe.

“…it’s never been about the profit. It’s about trying to brighten people’s lives,” Williams said calmly.
