Designing for 2D Space: Human or Machine?

October 29, 2024

For my art piece, “Human or Machine?” it combines the concept of Adobe Illustrator and AI (or Adobe Firefly) and translates it into three pieces that consider the message of machines, or AI in this case, being inserted into human beings. What might be considered “human” might no longer be human anymore. It’s the idea of a dystopian world overtaken by AI, where we don’t know which is which, and of considering its societal implications for our future. This all started from a single image I saw when researching speculative design: a see-through human tooth with a computer chip implanted inside. That then made me think more about technology and made me research concepts about the human body itself and the future of tech. Whether it be eye contacts with technology in them, see-through phones, or chips being implanted into human beings, all had their own pros and cons, and I took what I had and ran with it. With each digital mixed media piece layered one next to the other like a book, showing different parts of the human body, such as the eye, hand, and brain, I used simple colors, such as greens, pinks, and reds, and details, such as letters and numbers, that force the viewer to get up close to see what each poster entails. In the background, for example, each art piece draws on answers from ChatGPT, where I asked questions about AI being able to “see” as humans do, AI being put into the brain, or AI being fused with us. Each piece flows into the next, not only in the wording “Human or Machine?” but also in the overall message I’m trying to convey: do we want our future to be run by us, or will we be squashed out by the power of AI/machine? I experienced little challenge when creating this project, as it was fun experimenting with art I can create mixed with AI, as well as making the video for all my art pieces with the help of Pixabay's free music, the music I chose being “Robotic Dreams” by DSTechnician, Genmo’s AI animation program to make my art pieces move, and Premiere Pro to layer everything together. But it did make me realize the power of AI and just how much it could be fine-tuned in the future to be absolutely effortless, which enthralls but terrifies me.
